Smart and Safe Buildings: Balancing smartness and robustness in future building designs

Integrated technologies are fostering a change in the conventional building design and management. Buildings in urban environment are expected to be highly interconnected in future than today making them smarter, intelligent, liveable and sustainable. The integration of essential services (lighting, heating, cooling, safety, security and automation) and associated systems (sensors, actuators, controllers) in built-environment on one hand opens large avenue of opportunities for optimizing design and operation. However, on the other hand, it presents a huge void for regulatory bodies, in order to make sure new designs don’t fail and/or compromise safety (e.g. fire-protection) of building occupant’s and society. The researchers in Engineering Systems Design Group together with industry partner, DBI-The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology have thus hypothesized that “new cyber-physical hazards (for fire-safety) are expected to surface in future integrated smart buildings. For the success of smart buildings, it is important to be able to model and identify them and possibly mitigate their consequences too”.

The specific objectives of this research projects are:

  • To find a balance between integration and disintegration of systems and services within building management system, which is referred to as finding a balance between smartness and robustness.

  • To provide guidance for conducting risks analyses of smart buildings and thus test safety and security of the integrated building management systems in them
